Identity system · field guide

The brand is the name.
The sigil is its punctuation.

A wordmark-led identity. Joshua Udensi set in Fraunces is primary across every surface. A small brass threshold — a lozenge crossed by a hairline rule with a marker at the meeting point — is the only sigil. It signs essays, closes the footer, and marks the favicon. It never overpowers the wordmark.

01 · Wordmark

The canonical wordmark.

The wordmark is the brand. There is no parallel logo. Setting the name correctly is the entire formal act — typeface, optical size, tracking, features.

Typeface
Fraunces, with site-stack fallbacks (Iowan Old Style, Apple Garamond, Georgia, serif).
Weight
400. The wordmark earns its weight from optical-size, not from heavier cuts.
Optical size
opsz 32. One step above body, sized to make the serifs settle without performing. font-variation-settings: 'opsz' 32
Tracking
−0.5%. Tightened just enough to lock the cap structure without crowding the lower-case. letter-spacing: -0.005em
Features
Site-standard cv11 and ss01 stay on. The wordmark composes with body text. 'cv11''ss01'
Casing
Title case only. No all-caps version of the wordmark exists.
Colour
Ivory on dark, ink on light. The wordmark never depends on brass to read.

What not to do

  • Do not letter-space the wordmark by more than 0%. The optical size carries the rhythm.
  • Do not embolden. Heavier weights of Fraunces shift the voice toward editorial header, not signature.
  • Do not place the sigil above the cap line. It sits at cap-height of the wordmark or it does not appear.
  • Do not pair the wordmark with a separate logo. The wordmark is the logo.
  • Do not animate the wordmark on entry. It either is, or it is not.

02 · Anatomy

Three parts in deliberate relation.

The sigil composes from three pieces — a bounded form, a stroke that cuts it, and a small mark on the meeting. Each part means something on its own; the whole means more than the sum. Nsibidi-informed by method, not by quotation: the discipline of a sign that earns its space. Igbo by reading: the four sides hold uzọ anọ, the four roads.

The threshold · composed three parts, one mark
  1. i

    The lozenge.

A bounded, four-sided form. The container.

Four sides because in Igbo cosmology the number four names a complete world. Uzọ anọ — the four roads — and the four market days that hold the week, Eke, Orie, Afọ, Nkwọ. Time and space share a single count of four. The lozenge holds that count without quoting it.

  2. ii

    The transverse rule.

A line drawn through the form. The threshold proper.

The rule is the moment a road meets a road. A stroke that cuts and binds in the same gesture — Nsibidi treats lines as structural, not decorative. Crossing the lozenge horizontally, it names the act of passing through and the place where decisions are made.

  3. iii

    The marker.

A small brass square at the meeting point. The decision, held in the cell.

The marker is the only brass in the entire identity. It earns the colour by sitting exactly where a road meets a road — the place that matters. Brass is reserved for this and nothing else; that scarcity is what lets the system read as restrained across every surface.

Composed, the three parts work as one sign: a four-sided world, crossed; a meeting, marked. The threshold is honest at sixteen pixels because its logic — bounded form, transverse stroke, marker in cell — carries it long after the detail falls away.

The six tests it had to pass

  1. 01 Structural rather than decorative.
  2. 02 Authored rather than branded.
  3. 03 No literal cultural quotation.
  4. 04 Intelligible without explanation.
  5. 05 Stronger inside the typographic system.
  6. 06 Dignified ten years from now.

03 · Behaviour

The sigil at every size.

The threshold has to hold at every size the system asks of it — twelve pixels in margin metadata, sixteen in a browser tab, twenty as the punctuation that closes an essay, larger only when something genuinely calls for it. The reduction ladder is the test. Below sixteen pixels the marker fuses with the rule; that is the line beneath which the sigil is not used.

Form
A lozenge crossed by a horizontal rule, with a small brass marker on the threshold. Three parts in deliberate relation.
Logic
Nsibidi-informed by method, not by quotation: a bounded form, a transverse stroke, and a marker at the meeting point.
Igbo reading
The four-sided lozenge reads as uzo ano (uzọ anọ) - the four roads, the four market days (Eke, Orie, Afo, Nkwo), the crossroads as the place where decisions are made.
Stroke
1.5 units on a 32-unit grid. Round caps and joins. The mark holds at 16 px. stroke-width: 1.5
Colour
Brass for the marker; the structural lines take ivory, ink, or currentColor depending on the ground. #9d7a45
Standalone
The sigil only stands alone in three places: the favicon, the essay end mark, and PDF colophons.
What it is not
Not a plus. Not a crosshair. Not a pin. Not a compass. Not a monogram. Not a quoted Nsibidi character.

04 · Lockups

Wordmark and sigil in composition.

Three lockups cover every surface the system has to live on: the header, the footer, and the dossier cover. Everything else is one of these at a different size.

05 · Surfaces

Across grounds.

The system is tested on three grounds: the live obsidian site, warm ivory print, and a monochrome hold-test where brass is removed entirely. The system must still read on the third.

Obsidian

The live site. Everything else inherits from this.

06 · System rules

What the system is. What it avoids.

Is

  • The wordmark, set correctly.
  • The threshold sigil, used as punctuation.
  • Brass as a single, scarce accent — used only on the sigil’s marker.
  • Hairline rules, used to frame, never to enclose.
  • Calm. Quiet enough to live alongside the work.

Avoids

  • Standalone emblem use. The wordmark must always be the lead.
  • Ornamental monograms. No constructed JU ligature.
  • Heraldic crests, badges, or seals.
  • Trendy luxury-brand cues — bracketing, oversized initials, neon.
  • Decorative brass. Brass is for the sigil’s marker and nothing else.
  • Animated entries on the wordmark.
  • Glyphs that look like a plus, crosshair, pin, or compass.

07 · Canonical

The system, in one paragraph.

The brand is the name Joshua Udensi, set in Fraunces 400 at opsz 32 with tracking pulled in by half a percent. The single sigil is the threshold — a lozenge crossed by a hairline rule with a brass marker at the meeting point — used as punctuation in the colophon and as a standalone mark on the favicon and at the close of an essay. Nsibidi-informed by method, Igbo by reading: the four sides hold uzọ anọ, the four roads. There is no other logo, no other glyph, and no other use of the brass accent. The system is the typography, the punctuation, and the restraint.
